Some of our policy work relates to issues which are not sector specific or relate to issues which are important to more than one sector. In this section you will find our work on information literacy, freedom of information, international, copyright, ebooks, knowledge and information management and sustainable development goals. CILIP is currently undertaking an Ethics Review and a Privacy project. You will find information about our Ethics Review and ethics in general in this section and information about the Privacy project.

  • Copyright

CILIP and the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance (LACA) advocate for a fair and balanced copyright framework which respects the rights of copyright holders whilst placing equal value on the importance of users’ liberties.

  • Definition of Information Literacy

    High level definition

Information literacy is the ability to think critically and make balanced judgements about any information we find and use. It empowers us as citizens to reach and express informed views and to engage fully with society.

  • Knowledge and information management

CILIP see these skills as essential to the health of organisations of all types. They support evidence-based practice and policy-making and so help all organisations better achieve their aims: in the case of the private sector this will include increasing profit. At a strategic level it is about treating information as an asset and ensuring, just as with finance, staff or plant, the returns on this investment are optimised.

  • Ebooks

  • Equalities

CILIP has committed to creating, implementing, monitoring and improving an Equalities and Diversity Action Plan with the aim of becoming an organisation that truly represents and achieves diversity and celebrates and encourages it in others.  The Equalities and Diversity Action Plan was launched on July 31st 2017.

  • Freedom of access to information

Intellectual freedom is the right to access and share information, to intellectual activity and creativity, to expression and debate.

A fair and prosperous democratic society is built upon access to information and ideas, the ability to develop knowledge and communicate with others.

  • International

Library and information services are crucial to achieving access to information and freedom of expression and in fostering literacy and learning. We monitor global developments relevant to information professionals and advance the interests of our members by working with a number of international organisations.

  • Privacy project

CILIP is currently conducting a privacy project. The project will run from July 2017 - October 2018.

Privacy and confidentiality are fundamental to CILIP’s Code of Ethics and respondents to Shape the future put privacy in the top 10 priority policy agendas for CILIP to address during the lifetime of the Action Plan (2016-2020).

  • Sustainable development goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) set out a blueprint for development priorities up to 2030. There are seventeen goals with 169 targets covering a broad range of sustainable development issues, from ending poverty and hunger to improving health and education, reducing inequality, and combating climate change.
